What is detoxing and why should I do it?
Wellness "detoxes"
In popular health and wellness culture, "detoxing" often refers to juice cleanses, detox teas, fasting programs, supplements, colon cleanses, or special diets that claim to remove toxins from the body.
For most healthy people, there is little scientific evidence that these products or programs remove toxins better than the body's own systems. Your body already has highly effective detoxification mechanisms, including:
- The liver, which processes many substances.
- The kidneys, which filter waste products.
- The digestive system, lungs, and skin, which also play roles in waste elimination.
Should you do a detox?
A detox is generally worth doing for:
- Reducing or eliminating excessive alcohol use.
- Quitting smoking or vaping.
- Improving sleep.
- Eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and adequate protein.
- Staying physically active.
- Drinking enough water to satisfy thirst.
- Following medical advice if you have a substance-use disorder.
